Sexuality Education School Outreach Program @ Our Kings International School, Eliowhani, Port Harcourt

One of the core goals of the Development Advocacy and Gender Unit of Accord For Development is to mainstream gender in all program activities of the organization.

One objective of our Gender programs is to facilitate sexuality education programs for in-school teenagers across schools in the Niger Delta region.

To this end, the gender unit, carried out a program on sexuality education at Our Kings International School, Eliowhani, Port Harcourt. The program was targeted at students in the secondary section of the school and had in attendance about seventy (70) students (SS3 excluded as they are currently writing SSC Examinations) from JSS 1 – SS2.

The Gender team engaged the services of Dr. Dumebi Owa, she is a former president Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria, Lagos State branch and former chairman Nigerian Medical Association National Committee on World Health Organization activities. After the introductions by Efe Eikuokhae, Program Head of the DAG Unit, Dr. Owa took the participants through the underlisted topics which also falls in line with the Federal Government’s Family Life and HIV/AIDS Education (FLHE) curriculum.

  • Puberty
  • Menstrual Health and Hygiene
  • Building self esteem
  • Breast examination
  • Goal setting
  • STIs and Teenage Pregnancy

During the program, sanitary kits (comprising of sanitary pads, and disposable underwear) were distributed to the female students. Opportunity were also given to the students to ask questions on issues bothering them and Dr. Owa provided adequate answers to these questions.

The program was highly informative and participatory as the students were very enthusiastic about learning and procuring information.
